2019 Rays MLB Draft Recap

For the second-straight year, three former GRB Rays were selected in the annual MLB First-Year Player Draft. Connor Wollersheim, Rudy Rott and Cade Bunnell were chosen in the 8th, 9th and 40th rounds, respectively.

Wollersheim (Neenah, Wisconsin) a left-handed pitcher from Kent State was selected by the New York Mets with the 238th pick. Wollersheim was the Friday starter for the Golden Flashes and pitched to a 6-6 record in his Senior campaign. In 83.2 inning pitched, Wollersheim compiled a 4.20 ERA allowing 79 hits and only 39 walks. The lefty lead the Golden Flashes with 97 strikeouts in 15 starts on the bump. In 2018, Wollersheim went 5-2 in 56 innings, helping Kent State to an NCAA Tournament bid.

Rott (Holmen, Wisconsin), selected by the Philadelphia Phillies with the 270th selection, was named the MAC Player of the Year for the second-straight season, the first time in MAC history a player won the award twice. Rott was a force at the plate again in 2019, leading the Bobcats in all major offensive categories. Rott finished his Senior season hitting .382 with 18 doubles, 10 home runs and 47 RBIs and broke the Ohio University record for career hits with 293 base knocks. For his career, Rott hit to a .339 average with 60 doubles, 39 home runs and 186 RBIs.

Bunnell (Stoughton, Wisconsin), chosen by the Atlanta Braves in the 40th round, finished his Senior season at Indiana, helping the Hoosiers to and NCAA Tournament berth in 2019. Bunnell finished the year with a .196 average with a hit that included a walk-off single against Purdue on April 10th.

Since 2013, the GRB Rays have had 11 players selected in the MLB Draft, including Toronto Blue Jays catcher Danny Jansen who was chosen in the 16th round of the 2013 draft. Former Ray Jeren Kendall was selected in the 1st round (23rd overall) by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2017 draft out of Vanderbilt.

The Rays had three selections last year: Scott Schreiber (9th round – Houston Astros), Simon Rosenblum-Larson (19th round – Tampa Bay Rays) and Dalton Roach (21st round – Houston Astros).
